Oh George. You will be missed. I only met you briefly on my career break in the Galapagos in 2007 at your home at the Darwin Center on Santa Cruz Island. I was the one styling with the camera, the sunglasses, the daypack and the new pair of Keen’s. Yeah, I knew you’d remember. You were just waking up from a nap so I knew you were up for me sticking a camera in your face. Your story has always stuck with me. Of all the animals I met that week in the Galapagos, there was something special about you. Maybe it was your age, maybe it was your dashing good looks. Whatever it was, you should know that you had an impact on a lot of people. You taught us all about the fragility of life and the beauty of nature. You inspired a lot of people around the world. You should see the news reports out today. There are a lot of eulogies out there. They called you lonesome George, but you were hardly alone. Rest in peace. The world is better for having had you in it.

  1. We just got to see George late last year, and were really impressed by the work they’re doing at the Charles Darwin Research Station. His body may be gone, but his spirit will live on as a spirit of the Galapagos Islands’ ongoing conservation efforts!

Well, as a turtle, I have a love/hate relationship with tortoises. But it’s still always sad to see one pass. They’re good fellas, deep down, even if they do sometimes overstay their welcome at the family gatherings…
