Yesterday I found myself on the other side of the camera. Christine Gilbert, the woman behind the very popular site, Almost Fearless, came over to my apartment and home office yesterday to interview me for her new documentary on the ¨Digital Nomad¨ lifestyle.

Some people they have on their list from around the world are already earning their living from the web. Others, like me, are just starting out.  I’ve been following Christine for a while on Twitter and when she tweeted about her documentary, I responded, telling her who I was and the circumstances around my personal and professional life. She included me in her interviews liking my story. Yesterday, I added my experience to the conversation she´s having with other people in the digital nomaderatti from around the world.

About Digital Nomads

Wikipedia defines a digital nomad as ¨someone who leverages technology and the internet to work remotely—from home, the coffee shop, internet cafe, or even to collaborate remotely with teams anywhere in the world. These entrepreneurs & professionals frequently use new technologies like the iPhone, wifi, resourcefulness, and web-based applications to develop location independence and earn an income wherever they live or travel.¨

OK, so I’m not earning an income just yet. But, I’m working on it.  (Firm launch date is coming soon!)

How The Day Went

We set up on my balcony which overlooks the mountains and cityscape of Bogota.  She asked about why I work from a home office, why I´m in Colombia and how I manage my work.  She wanted to know how I use the web to build my business. And, she wanted to know what I thought it takes to succeed as a digital nomad.  Of course, as someone starting out, I don’t have the full perspective of seeing through a full business cycle. But, she was interested to hear from someone right in the middle of the tornado of getting a new business off the ground. Christine´s interview style is very much like mine, conversational.  So, she was very easy to talk to.

I was just excited to meet Christine. Like me, she left her corporate job to travel and she’s quite the travel blogger sensation running the popular websites Almost Fearless and Zen Foodist.  The best part about her, she´s incredibly down to earth. Drew (who I kept calling Dave, then he started calling me Dave. It became a thing between us) has his own sites, DrewGilbert.com, and UnDad which is his take on fatherhood.  Poor Drew left my apartment with a sunburned head. Bogota doesn’t get a lot of direct sunlight with its mostly cloudy skies.  When we do get sunshine like yesterday, we all burn quickly. I escaped with a farmer´s tan myself.

I also got to meet Cole, Christine and Drew’s 4 month old son.  Dexter, my 5 month old bulldog, also enjoyed meeting Cole and showed his affection by softly gnawing on Cole’s foot. Luckily Cole, mom and dad, took it all in stride. It was a great afternoon. I don´t know if she’ll wind up using 5 seconds or 5 minutes of my interview. But, I can’t wait to see the final product either way.
